The construction of the Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a multifaceted endeavor involving several key components and stakeholders.

Project Overview

The Acrisure Amphitheater is a planned 12,000-seat outdoor venue situated along the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids. The project encompasses 10 acres and is part of a broader 31-acre riverfront development aimed at revitalizing the area and enhancing public access to the river. The amphitheater will feature 7,000 fixed seats and 5,000 lawn seats, along with amenities such as food and beverage spaces, a performance platform, and dedicated facilities for ticketing and refreshments.

Construction Timeline and Milestones

  • Groundbreaking: The project broke ground in May 2024, following the demolition of existing structures formerly owned by the Grand Rapids Department of Public Works.

  • Canopy Construction: A significant milestone was achieved in March 2025 with the installation of the final two steel beams on the amphitheater’s expansive 60,000-square-foot canopy. This canopy enhances acoustics and provides shelter for the audience.

  • Completion: The project is on schedule and within its $184 million budget, with completion anticipated in May 2026.

Key Stakeholders and Roles

  • Grand Action 2.0: This nonprofit economic development organization is spearheading the project, collaborating with various partners to bring the vision to fruition.

  • Architects: Progressive AE serves as the executive architect, responsible for finalizing schematic designs and ensuring the project’s architectural integrity.

  • Construction Firms: A joint venture between Pioneer Construction and Barton Malow is leading the construction efforts, leveraging their combined expertise to manage the complex build.

  • Naming Rights Sponsor: Acrisure, a global insurance broker, secured the naming rights with a $30 million contribution toward the project’s budget.

Economic and Community Impact

The amphitheater is projected to host over 54 ticketed performances each season, attracting more than 300,000 visitors annually. The broader riverfront development is expected to infuse approximately $876 million into the local economy over a 30-year period, fostering community engagement and stimulating economic growth.

In summary, the construction of the Acrisure Amphitheater involves coordinated efforts among architects, construction firms, and community organizations, all working together to create a landmark venue that will enrich Grand Rapids culturally and economically.
