The New Harbor Bridge Project

In 2017, Williams Form Engineering Co (WFEC) was chosen to supply post-tensioning and reinforcement material to the New Harbor Bridge Project in Corpus Christi, Texas. The $800 million project proposed a new segmental, cable-stay bridge to replace the aging through arch bridge currently used to cross the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. TXDOT awarded Flatiron/Dragados USA, JV, the design-build contract in April 2015, and completion is anticipated to be sometime in 2023.

The new bridge will span 6.44 miles with 6-lanes (3 NB and 3 SB), a median barrier, shoulders, and a bicycle/pedestrian shared-use path. The main span of the bridge will measure 1661 ft in length (roughly 5- 1/2 football fields) and sits 205 ft above the channel below. Once completed, it will be the tallest structure in Texas and the longest cable-stay bridge in the United States.

WFEC fabricated and delivered roughly 9 million-lbs of domestic steel to the project. The material included Grade 150 (ASTM A722) and Grade 75 (ASTM A615) all-thread bar, hardware, custom bearing plates, end caps, and assorted post-tensioning accessories. WFEC’s proprietary concentric thread-form and precision machined hardware, which allow for easy and precise tensioning, are preferred by a majority of contractors in the post-tension and ground anchoring markets.

WFEC’s long history of success and ability to support large projects in the past throughout the US made them the obvious choice for this monumentous endeavor. Their ability to set and maintain an aggressive delivery schedule, track and trace material, coordinate emergency deliveries, and expertly manage all aspects of the supply chain was key to the success of this impressive undertaking.

Williams Form Engineering takes pride in the material they supply and the people they employ. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Flatiron/Dragados and look forward to working together again in the future.
