With the growing population of Atlanta, Marta needed to build new stations throughout the Atlanta area in order to keep up with public demand. These new stations are generally built in highly populated and congested areas, as was the case with Sandy Springs Sub Station. To accomplish a "Cut and Cover" method of construction, a soil nail wall was proposed and constructed by Malcolm Drilling to act as necessary shoring during construction of the station. With the two sides of the "Pit" to be soil nailed walls, the total square area was over 90,000 square feet consisting of a combined 3100 #10 and #8 size soil nails. The lengths of the nails ranged from 21'0" to 56'0". The final subgrade was more than 80'0" below the initial elevation and was accomplished in up to 12 lifts in some areas.
