Two existing head type hydros needed to increase their capacity to meet FERC 200 year flood requirements. Williams' 1-3/4" 150 KSI rods were set down vertically through he dam, then the soil to the bedrock 80' below. The anchors were then post-tensioned in grout. Atop the dam, a pocket former was used to recess the head of the anchor on the spillway. The Williams anchor was chosen over a strand system for a multiplicity of reasons. A smaller hole could be drilled; a single anchor rod head verses a multiple strand head cut down considerably in barge time; the load capacity of this older dam was limited by the lower PSI concrete of it's time, which demands anchors congruent with the dams concrete capacity. The Williams anchors could be used to their capacity without danger of damage to the existing dam, making them the most cost effective choice.
