This 1/3 of a mile tunnel linking the 63rd Street & Queens Boulevard subway line is the final part of 306 million dollars in federal funding allocated to this point. The connector will relieve severe over crowding of the Queens Boulevard subway, one of the most heavily used transit routes in the United States. By diverting about one third of the Manhattan bound trains into the under used 63rd Street line, an additional15 trains per hour can run between Manhattan and Queens.
The 1" 150 KSI Spin-Lock Anchors are used to support floor columns while excavation for a new tunnel goes on under the existing subway. This will take place while all the existing lines are kept in service. By using the Spin-Lock it allows for the concentration of the bond load in a minimal embedment of concrete. The anchors will be tensioned to secure the floor hanging from the support columns. The high vibrations from the subway trains make it critical for the anchor system to be prestressed.
